Data analytics for passenger train stations

Deutsche Bahn

DB Station&Service AG, a subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn AG, operates, maintains and manages the approximately 5,400 stations and stops in the DB Netz AG rail network. As part of the project Digital Analytics Passenger Stations escalators and elevators are equipped with sensors to diagnose system problems at an early stage and react to failures. The sensor data is analyzed using Tableau.

Customer situation

  • Escalators, elevators, fire alarm systems etc. were equipped with sensors for the data analytics project in passenger stations
  • There is no flexible BI tool for collecting and analyzing the sensor data by different departments
  • Separate source data, no central evaluation possible
  • Complex, partly manual reporting system

Procedure

  • Streaming of sensor data, partly in real time, into a central Apache Hadoop data lake
  • Significant conception and implementation of a Teradata data warehouse for further technical linking and refinement for the final evaluations
  • Creation of curated data sources and Tableau dashboards for the evaluation and control of key figures on Tableau Server
  • Support in the development and expansion of self-service analytics

Project result

  • Various previously separate source data have been merged and made usable for central evaluations
  • Significant time savings thanks to interactive dashboards that replace manual input
  • Newly available evaluation options
  • Faster diagnosis of system problems and reaction to failures
