Initial situation & goal

Tableau was successfully introduced within the financial institution using a bottom-up approach. Several teams have adopted the tool and significantly advanced their internal reporting. The growth of the internal Tableau community to several thousand users worldwide now required a proactive approach to further develop this community in a targeted manner. As a result, internal calls for a centrally managed platform and a Tableau Competence Center became louder. The goal was to effectively manage the platform and the published content, but also to build a cross-team community and promote their cooperation.

Approach

A global Tableau Competence Center includes not only the governance of the platform but also the empowerment and support of the community and the training of users.  In the first step, internal, detailed training sessions were conducted for this purpose. These were intended to familiarize future members of the Tableau Center of Excellence not only with the Tableau tool, but also with how to pass on knowledge. The implementation of modular trainings & doctor sessions, the development of learning materials and the support at internal Tableau Days made it possible to strengthen the internal Tableau Community and build up expertise.

The client is a financial institution that operates in around 70 countries worldwide and employs over 90,000 people.

The result

The establishment of the Tableau Center of Excellence has enabled rapid growth of the tableau community within the bank. A Tableau Champions Community has been established worldwide, which is constantly passing on its knowledge. Developed training materials are permanently available to users and make it easier to get started with the Tableau tool. These steps have laid the foundations for a continuous increase in the number of users on the Tableau platform, which continues to grow.

 

High-Availability BI Cloud Architecture

The customer is planning a central, intuitive, interactive platform for the public provision of statistical Data and has opted for a cloud-based environment in AWS and Tableau as a visualization tool.

Initial situation & goal

The customer plans a central, easy-to-use, interactive platform for public provision of statistical data. The financial institution has chosen a cloud-based environment in AWS and the use of tableau software as its visualization solution. The entire environment is to be planned, provided and operated as a full-service solution by an external service provider. The environment must meet the highest SLAs and, in terms of availability, enable an outage of <1 hour per month.

Procedure

In a 3-month consulting project, we set up a managed service for our customer based on the proven ITIL framework for data infrastructures in the cloud. Within the scope of a short strategy and design phase, all relevant requirements regarding security, network, architecture, IAM/SAML, service desk are first recorded and documented in stakeholder workshops and then, based on this, test environments and processes are designed within a few weeks. In the so-called transition phase, the predefined structure and configuration of the infrastructure is set up. This is followed by the commissioning and establishment of the support processes, before the go-live of the productive environment is started in the operations phase.

The customer

A Tableau-based reporting system is designed for a user-friendly presentation of the desired statistics. In order to ensure that the data is provided under SLA and to provide an easy-to-maintain platform, a system architecture is being developed that meets the highest security standards. It includes a main server distributed over three zones and cloud front cashing mechanisms for increased accessibility. In addition, a backup server will be set up, operating in a "cold standby" mode in a second geographical region to ensure maximum reliability. The entire solution runs seamlessly in an AWS environment and is automated with Terraform.

The result

The customer is provided with a 24/7 available Tableau reporting system, with the possibility to easily perform incident detection and automated monitoring. The designed solution meets all initial customer requirements by guaranteeing high availability and reliability of the analysis. At the same time, it enables the customer to easily and straightforwardly manage the underlying complex infrastructure.

Risk Analytics Platform

In investment banking, up-to-date and in-depth risk analyses are required. In the project, process steps should be reduced, error potentials reduced and advanced risk analyses made possible.

Initial situation & goal

In investment banking, up-to-date, in-depth and accurate risk analyses are always required. In the past, 95% of the department's risk reporting was based on complex analyses in Excel spreadsheets and tedious manual processes to combine and evaluate data from several upstream systems. The aim was to reduce the number of process steps and to reduce the potential for errors. The aim was to lay the foundations for advanced risk analyses and to be able to react promptly to "on-the-fly" requests from management.

Procedure

In order to replace the manual processes described above, a central, analytical database has been set up, with a data model that can be continuously further developed. The reports in Excel were replaced by a modern, interactive tableau reporting system. The team was empowered to use tableau as a self-service analytics solution and to carry out deeper analyses thanks to the improved data basis. The roll-out of Tableau is being continuously continued within the company; new teams are given access to existing content and can independently drive the development of new, more in-depth analyses.

The result

In a short learning process, the department was empowered to perform modern and improved risk analysis - independent of the traditional, long-lasting IT development cycles. The business users connected more than 20 different data sources and provided more than 100 interactive dashboards in a supported phase of ten months. This content served as the basis for a global roll-out. Through transparent and direct communication (such as a monthly newsletter), the adaptation of the new solution was driven forward and thus quickly accepted by additional end users.

Initial situation & goal

Due to the increasing number of reports in the individual company divisions, the customer plans to develop a one-stop reporting portal in order to positively influence the democratization of data within the entire company. The primary goal of this one-stop reporting portal is to reduce the complexity of data procurement by developing a transparent overview of the existing reporting in the company.

Approach

After a detailed requirements analysis, the cornerstones of the future portal were planned: design, functionalities and architecture. Subsequently, the portal was developed in a test environment and successively built up, in regular coordination with the customer. After approval by the customer, the portal was implemented in the customer's productive environment. All functionalities of the portal were tested again and the portal was filled with the desired content. The rollout was then carried out throughout the entire company.

Based on the company's annual turnover, the customer is the world's leading pharmaceutical company with headquarters in Switzerland. The company employs over 90,000 people worldwide. In addition to the production and sale of pharmaceutical products, the company also manufactures reagents and equipment for medical examinations. 

The result

Prioritized user stories and corresponding portal functionalities were implemented, as well as various design concepts and UX/UI click dummies. A usage concept including an Active Directory integration was implemented and integrated into the M2 portal. The portal is based on the technology Typo3 and also uses the Tableau Connection Manager developed by M2. A frontend and backend user documentation as well as a corresponding introduction for future users was also part of the project services.

Initial situation & goal

The goal was to establish a Management Information System for shareholders, internal management & management of the client. Shareholders were to be given easy access to developments in the company on any end device 24/7 - in a way that would fit seamlessly into the company's corporate identity. In the previous setup, we only responded to specific requests from management. Excel reports were created or adapted manually, ad-hoc solutions were the rule. This carried a time lag that prevented data-driven decisions from being promoted.    

Approach

M2. developed a portal: in the interaction of Alteryx & Tableau the internal information flow was coordinated & automated. The data is prepared in an understandable and appealing way. New strategic projects can be quickly implemented and easily provided. The content is integrated into the M2 Custom Portal, which was developed according to CI and user requirements and clearly presents the client's brand. The portal & all reports are optimized for the most common mobile devices, so that the content is always available even when on the road.

The customer

The client is Europe's leading Fintech ecosystem with headquarters in Berlin and offices in other European cities. The company offers technology and software solutions for various companies and is building up independent Fintech companies. The company employs over 1,100 people from more than 80 nations.

The result

The teams can now act proactively and answer questions that have not yet been asked. The constant availability of data promotes a culture of data-driven decision-making. New teams volunteer to become part of the platform. Thus, the onboarding of new teams becomes a bottom-up process and transparency becomes a highly valued asset.

Since the introduction of Tableau as a central Business Intelligence Tool in 2017, the company has been accompanied and co-designed by M2. Training programs for the Tableau users were provided early on.

Initial situation & goal

Since 2017, M2 has accompanied and helped shape the introduction of Tableau as a central business intelligence tool in the Research & Development division. From the outset, the aim was to enable future Tableau users (several hundred users were targeted) to quickly exploit the possibilities offered by Tableau as an analysis and reporting tool through sensible and targeted training and support measures. An effective mix of training and information modules was to be designed and implemented for this purpose.

Approach

The number of tableau users in the group was increased step by step. In the beginning, the future report creators were trained with the classic Tableau Desktop Basic Training, later the training module "Web Edit Authoring" was added, which is purely focused on the web users on the Tableau Server. In order to relieve the IT department in the implementation of the project, we established several support models on site, such as Flow Time (a Q&A format open to all users, once a week) or 1:1 sessions (fixed, personal consulting appointments that can be booked). In addition, a central point of contact was set up on the company intranet.

The customer

The customer is a listed German automotive supplier based in Hanover. The company employs around 240,000 people at over 400 locations in 61 countries and has developed from a pure tyre manufacturer to one of the largest automotive suppliers in the world.

The result

The goal of providing several hundred end users from different departments and areas with relevant information via Tableau has been achieved. The training and support measures carried out by M2 were always adapted to current requirements in coordination with the customer and at the same time created highly respected standards. The tableau know-how within the company could be significantly increased through regular and targeted support, often oriented towards specific business cases.

Initial situation & goal

DB Station&Services, a sister company of the customer DB Systel, equips escalators, elevators, fire alarm systems, etc. with sensor technology throughout the country to diagnose system problems at an early stage and respond to failures. The sensor data is fed into the "Data Analytics Passenger Stations" platform, where it is evaluated with tableau in dashboards from various specialist departments up to board level in order to meet the demanding target values for customer satisfaction, service quality, operational safety and system availability.

Procedure

The sensor data is streamed together with associated company master data, partly in real time, into a central Apache Hadoop Data Lake. The further technical linkage and refinement for the final evaluations is carried out in a Teradata Data Warehouse, significantly designed and implemented by M2. In the final step, our consultants create curated data sources and tableau dashboards for the evaluation and control of the key figures on tableau servers on the one hand and support the development and expansion of self-service analytics at the customer's site on the other.

The client

DB Systel GmbH is a provider of information and telecommunication services and our direct customer. It handles IT and telecommunications infrastructure projects, among others for DB Station&Service AG. This is the operating company of the transport stations on the DB Netz AG network. The business purpose of DB Station&Service is the operation and maintenance of stations and stops. Both companies are subsidiaries of Deutsche Bahn AG.

The result

In the project, various previously separated source data were merged and made available for central evaluation. The dashboards developed play a central role in the various departments - from regional division managers to plant engineers - in implementing the Group's operational excellence guidelines. Even today, complex manual reporting has been replaced by interactive dashboards, resulting in significant time savings and newly available evaluation options.

Forecasting with Tableau

The forecasting process could only be guaranteed with manual effort and was prone to errors. The M2 development Form Builder allows the forecast input directly on the Tableau Dashboard.

Initial situation & goal

In the Commercial Management department, all forecasting and planning processes of the company are centrally controlled and consolidated. The company's advertising revenues are forecast on a weekly, monthly and annual basis. In addition to the Commercial Management Department, the Marketing Department and, ultimately, the Management Board are also involved in this process. The forecasting process could only be guaranteed with a high degree of manual effort on the part of all the departments involved and involved numerous individual steps that were prone to errors.

Approach

The aim was to develop a web service integrated into Tableau that would facilitate the process of submitting forecasts. The marketing departments were to be enabled to enter their forecasts independently and without system break and manual process detours - directly in the tableau dashboard. All adjustments were to be visualized live immediately. All forecasts were to be stored in a central Redshift database so that they could be reused for other evaluations and dashboards. The central control should remain in the commercial management.

The customer 

Media Impact is a marketing joint venture of Axel Springer SE (share: 74.9 percent) and the FUNKE Media Group (share: 25.1 percent). The title portfolio comprises over 100 versatile media brands: The high-reach titles of the BILD brand family such as BILD, BILD am SONNTAG, AUTO BILD, SPORT BILD, COMPUTER BILD, the quality titles such as WELT, WELT am SONNTAG, ICON, BLAU, BILANZ, among others, as well as the strong titles of the FUNKE MEDIENGRUPPE such as BILD der FRAU, HÖRZU, myself, DONNA and LandIdee, among others. Media Impact is one of the biggest cross-media advertising marketers in Germany.

The result

Several dashboards have been developed for the business department, which depict the customer's diverse forecast processes and will simplify them in the future. Technically, the still quite new possibility was used here to integrate certain functions into tableau dashboards via the tableau extension API. In addition, we developed the M2 Form Builder, a tool that enables the company to create such interactive dashboards including forecast functionality independently in the future. The solution is therefore not statically limited to a single use case, but can be quickly adapted to other scenarios.

Advertising Analytics with Tableau

For more than 15 years, the customer had been using an outdated BI technology to analyze advertising revenues. The project objective was to establish a modern, dynamic and flexible BI system.

Initial situation & goal

For more than 15 years, the client had been using an outdated BI technology to analyze the advertising revenues and performance of its sales activities. This technology had to cope with enormous performance problems due to large amounts of data. In addition, the system was very static, so that the connection of different data sources and dynamic, frequently changing analysis requirements could no longer be guaranteed. High manual and personnel costs were the result. The project goal was to implement a modern, dynamic and above all flexible BI system that would fully cover these requirements. This system was to be centrally administered and supported by the in-house IT department.

Approach

In a subsidiary of the group, Tableau was introduced in pilot operation and a PoC with the reporting of the company's sales and marketing activities was successfully implemented. Tableau was received extremely positively by the users in the subsidiary, so that in a second step the rollout to other areas in the group could be carried out. At the same time, a new data warehouse was set up in AWS and the responsibility for the entire solution was transferred to the central IT department of Axel Springer SE

The client is one of the largest publishing groups in Europe with a range of multimedia, national and international brands, with over 15,000 employees worldwide. The client's media are among the most widely covered titles in Europe. The company is based in Berlin.

 

The customer

Tableau is now used by customers in many different areas for a wide range of application scenarios, some four years after its initial introduction. The respective clients are running on separate server sites, which are centrally administered by the in-house IT department, with regular support from M2. The majority of the almost 1,000 users use Tableau to analyse and control the advertising business. As a result of the successful establishment of Tableau within the company, exciting, more advanced projects (such as the sensible use of Tableau Extensions) are now being implemented across all departments in order to make the possibilities offered by Tableau effectively available to the company.

Initial situation & goal

Motion data is available in large, unstructured quantities, which poses a challenge for the visualization quality and also for performance. The goal of the project was to enable the interactive visualization of mobile phone data that captures the movement patterns of travelers in a data protection compliant manner. Priority was given to a high degree of user-friendliness, in particular to enable external customers to gain an in-depth insight into the complex data using self-service analytics. In addition, high-performance dashboards for the rapid analysis of traffic flows were to be implemented.

Approach

For the analysis of geographic data, an Alteryx workflow was first created using geospatial functions to automate the process of data processing and the generation of geographic metrics. These can be distance calculations, directions or average commuting times. Raw data was then imported into Tableau and an interactive dashboard was created to provide the available motion pattern functions in a user-friendly way. An Exasol live data connection was set up to provide end users with the best possible performance of the entire workflow with mass data.

The customer 

The client specializes in big-data analyses for mobility companies and transport administrations. Based on mobile phone data, the movement patterns of travellers are recorded in accordance with data protection regulations.

The result

In accordance with the customer's requirements, a high-performance and easy-to-manage dashboard was implemented, which enables end users to visualize transaction data that can be filtered by cardinal point, time, day of the week, purpose of travel and distance. The visualization contains a heat map as a central design element for the optimal display of movement behavior. Despite the large volume of data and the complexity of the initial data, the methods chosen enabled live interaction of the customers on the underlying data sources.

Initial situation & goal

The raw data from cross-national surveys and qualitative research were transferred manually into tabular formats and static presentations with a high expenditure of time and money. A new project approach was to be developed for faster analysis of the results and flexible visualization. In the past, weeks used to pass between data collection and evaluation. The aim was to enable ECFR analysts to access the elaborately compiled information during the survey phase and to make it available to a broad public in a timely manner.

Vorgehensweise

Mit Hilfe der vom ECFR für die Umfragen eingesetzten Fragebögen entwickelten unsere Berater ein für die visuelle Analyse optimiertes Datenmodell in Tableau Prep Builder. Dank dessen Flexibilität konnte bereits im nächsten Schritt mit der Erstellung von Analyse-Ansichten in Tableau Desktop begonnen werden. Das Team des ECFR war so früh in der Lage, seine Analysen und Publikationen optimal für die Veröffentlichung und Kommunikation vorzubereiten. Die fertigen Visualisierungen wurden mittels Tableau Public der breiten Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht.

Approach

The European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) is an award-winning international think tank with offices in seven European capitals and a strong focus on data-driven international cooperation projects. In the project Rethink, funded by the Mercator Foundation: Europe project funded by the Mercator Foundation, ECFR regularly conducts complex, transnational expert surveys throughout Europe. The results are published in freely accessible analyses and data visualizations. In a number of countries they serve as impulses for political decision-making and negotiation processes as well as for social discourse.

The result

The added value achieved in the project ranges from efficient raw data structuring to flexible visualization. Key aspects are simplification, streamlining and flexibility. In addition to the considerable savings in time and effort, a further added value lies in the upgrading of existing publication formats through interactive result views and the possibility of curating them precisely for different target groups. Examples are the European Solidarity Tracker and the EU Coalition Explorer. Which appeared in June 2020. The developed project approach can be easily transferred to other survey projects by the client, thus creating synergies beyond the actual context of the assignment.

Initial situation & goal

The goal was to create an efficient reporting platform to automate and optimize existing processes in daily and monthly reporting and thus to unlock potential for visual data analysis. The Excel reports used so far were manually created or adjusted on a monthly basis. The internal and external data had to be updated manually every day. The error-prone report creation regularly took up a lot of time and resources and led to a lack of transparency between the company divisions and teams involved.

Approach

The reporting solution should contain both internal and external data (e.g. weather) and be made available to different user groups in the form of interactive reports on a central tableau server platform. An optimized data model with a live data connection to the POS system and the automated integration of internal and external data was developed. Using an algorithm for the daily integration of current weather data, manual data entry steps were eliminated. According to the business requirements, interactive tableau dashboards were created, which show the current key figures. Tableau prep workflows for data preparation also accelerate and simplify the reporting process.

The customers

The customer is the largest municipal pool operator in Europe. The municipal company offers around 61 baths spread over the districts of a German metropolis with over a million inhabitants. Around six million people visit these facilities every year.

The result

An efficient process and intuitive, interactive reports create space for new questions and ideas. The increased transparency and availability of data as well as the high quality of know-how transfer motivated the team to ask new questions. The objective, data-driven decisions for further organisational development can thus be optimally supported.

Until now, mobile.de evaluated the queries manually using Excel lists. This is a costly undertaking, considering that around 7 million visitors a month are active on the website and the transaction volume is in the double-digit billion range each year. This means that in the past, depending on the task at hand, 0.5 to 5 man-days of effort were required.

Approach

Due to M2's extensive experience in the implementation of tableau and also in the automotive sector, the market-specific requirements were quickly captured and implemented in an innovative solution. The Excel lists used until then were completely replaced and, functionally optimized, replaced by tableau. The solution created drastically reduces the workload - from several days to a few hours. Inquiry parameters can be changed in a matter of minutes, enabling fast response times to short-term changes.

The customers

With 1.4 million available vehicles, mobile.de is Germany's largest vehicle market. Every nine seconds a car is sold via mobile.de. This gives the company access to extensive supply and demand data. mobile.de offers this data to car dealers and car manufacturers, helping them to optimise their own prices and generate more demand.

The result

The Tableau-based reporting platform has established itself as a new business segment. Through the simple use and efficient access to the car data - with a high degree of query flexibility - mobile.de customers gain important insights. For example, they are able to see how individual vehicle models in the various versions develop in value and ultimately sell. Without time-consuming feedback loops, it is now possible to flexibly answer even short-term and detailed analysis queries.

Initial situation & goal

The aim of the project assignment was to enable the preparation and analysis of defects in assemblies of truck axles using machine learning. The core challenge was the user-friendly visualization of the complex data relationships in interactive tableau dashboards as well as the high-performance publication of the data for various user groups.

Approach

Any application of Machine Learning requires a detailed analysis of the available data to identify clues that may influence the outcome of predictions. The collected information on relevant features was presented as individual dashboards for each truck component with complex user navigation through filter mechanisms and Guided Analytics flows. Furthermore, a machine learning model was implemented in R based on more than 100 influencing variables. Thus, the failure probability of each of these mechanisms can be predicted depending on user-defined parameters.

The customer

The customer is a think tank for quality management in a network in the automotive sector and its member companies.

The result

Complex data correlations were made consumable through individual, clearly structured dashboards. To accelerate the analysis capabilities, an optimized data model for high-performance databases was implemented (Exasol). The introduction of machine learning made it possible to generate life expectancy forecasts based on statistical classification methods for all of the manufacturer's truck axles on the market.
